This series of work began life in Berlin when I was between apartments with all my art equipment locked in a cellar in Kreuzberg. I created some small pieces for an exhibition from paper and ink i.e. ready to hand materials, and this sparked off a whole series of diorama style 3d scenes, which much later then led to making sculptures from clay and other mixed media.
The series was broadly based on the theme “My Fairytale Life” hinting at the illustrative quality of the drawing. I created tiny paper scenes within boxes or under glass in presenting a more adult, and depressing hopeless version of the fairytale ending. The sculptures led to some large scale ink and acrylic drawings completed in a similar style to the three-dimensional work and the use of drawings as photographic subjects.
