Elena Duff
About
Elena Duff is an interdisciplinary visual artist and musician working at the intersection of image, image sound and story. Her practice includes painting, video, performance and experimental sound composition. She is currently exploring the weaving together of a personal visual mythology along with field recordings video and music to creative immersive works that explore transformation and liminality.
Art Practice
My current work is increasingly multimedia, blending hand‑painted imagery with animation, video, sound and sculptural elements. Through narrative scenes of imagined worlds and sculptural forms, I visualise the land’s hidden memory, its layered histories, collective myths, animal-world interactions, and rituals buried beneath the surface.
Due to the influence of my musical pursuits, my practice is increasingly going towards the multimedia, combining hand-painted imagery, electronic and other music along with animation/video. I’m currently developing a body of work that (as my paintings already do) explores collective memory, myth, and intuitive storytelling through dreamlike, imagined worlds but this time through this more multi-disciplinary approach.
I have exhibited in Ireland, Germany and the UK as well as further afield, have works in collections in Ireland and abroad, and have been the recipient of numerous art awards from both The Arts Council of Ireland and Cavan Arts.
Music Practice
I am a multi-instrumentalist, producer and singer-songwriter, with studies in field recording, audio engineering and music production. I released my self-produced, recorded debut album contemporary/alt folk album ‘In the Wilderness’ in October 2023. I’m currently focusing on using live looping to create full-bodied sonic performances .
My indie-folk music goes under the name Darkling Moon and a side project of electronica and experimental electronic music goes under the name Vesperella. I’ve played with others at various festivals such as Electric Picnic and Longitude as well as performing as solo musical act at multiple other venues and events around Ireland.
