ABOUT
I’m a Dubliner living in county Cavan in Ireland. Under my own name Elena Duff I write and produce songs that are broadly folk / indie-folk / alt-folk in genre, although my influences are much broader than that taking in early jazz and blues, sean nós, torch songs and more. Song themes include love and loss, and I have a real interest in folklore so many songs refer to existing folklore or tell my own tales. Many of our favourite Irish folk songs and even the earliest Irish poem refer to our beautiful flora and fauna. This is also a passion of mine, so the natural world also regularly features in my lyrics.
The songs range from delicate and slow to those with a more driving beat. Generally I accompany myself on either guitar or soprano/baritone ukulele, but for some songs I play a stick dulcimer or banjo. A loop pedal is gradually being introduced to my live act to give this solo performer a fuller sound with percussion, drums, bass etc.
In 2022 I completed a course in audio engineering and festival production at The Sound Training College in Dublin. I’ve also completed numerous online masterclasses in songwriting, mixing, mastering, pop music production and general music production.
I’ve also been both a finalist and semi-finalist in songwriting competitions and performed solo and as part of other acts at various events, gigs, showcase nights open mics and festivals over the years. I livestream (irregularly!) usually on Twitch.
VESPERELLA
A (sporadic) electronica side project is the creation Vesperella, the name I go by for more electro songs. I spent six years living in Berlin, Germany and the city is infused with electronic techno music. While there, I developed a real love for this genre and wanted to explore it musically, so Vesperella was born.
